WTA Tour - Bartoli survives Linz scare Eurosport - Tue, 21 Oct 22:26:00 2008
French sixth seed Marion Bartoli needed seven match points to overcame the challenge of Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-4 2-6 7-6 and reach the second round of the Linz Open.
More StoriesLinz drawsheet Ivanovic to fight new rules Bartoli took two hours 41-minutes to edge through, leading the final set tiebreak 6-2 before eventually closing it out 10-8.
Bartoli set the tone for the match when she hit three double faults en route to surrendering her serve in the opening game.
With both players struggling to hold serve, Bartoli dug deep to secure the first set.
The errors continued to fly off Bartoli's racket and a fifth double fault handed Sugiyama a double break and a 3-0 lead in the second set.
After Bartoli took time out to receive treatment on her right wrist, Sugiyama stood firm to level the contest.
The duo continued to trade breaks in the decider but despite twice serving for the match at 5-4 and 6-5, Sugiyama failed to clinch victory and allowed Bartoli to fight back.
Former champion and fifth seed Nadia Petrova also had problems against Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko before emerging with a 3-6 6-3 6-1 victory.
The Russian appeared to be in total control after sweeping to a 5-0 lead in the second set but Bondarenko, who won the Birmingham title in June, refused to give up.
She won the next three games and came within two points of getting back on serve before Petrova recovered and closed out the set with an ace.
In the final set, Petrova found her range to win the last six games for the loss of only five points.
"Kateryna played exceptionally well in the first set and she got me on the run," said Petrova. "I was a little bit surprised by that and it took me a while to realise what I had to do.
"I started doing the right things in the second set, then at 5-0 I went a little bit to la-la land. But I was glad the way I managed to finish it off."
Bondarenko's sister Alona ensured that the family enjoyed some success when she beat Russian qualifier Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-3.

Next up for Zvonareva will be No.6 seed Marion Bartoli, who ended the run of Alona Bondarenko, 63 57 61, although not before she squandered a 5-1 lead in the second set and was forced to go to a third.*Sigh* But thats our Marion.N ever a dull moment

BePa sinks Marion 0-6 1-6 But brave Marion fought to the end. It was too much to ask or expect after 9 sets of tennis in a very short space of time. And against quality players too! Well tried Marion!
