The reigning Wimbledon runner-up and the 2006 champion and finalist and have announced their intentions to play the 2008 Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open. Marion Bartoli, Vera Zvonareva and Katarina Srebotnik have committed to play the August tournament, which will be held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. Tathiana Garbin of Italy also has announced her intention to play in Cincinnati for the first time.
Bartoli, 23, beat three top-20 players including world No. 1 Justine Henin to reach the 2007 Wimbledon singles final before falling to Venus Williams. That effort helped the Frenchwoman reach a career-high ranking of No. 9. She will make her fourth appearance in Cincinnati, having reached the semifinals in 2004 and the quarterfinals in 2006. This year, she’s reached the semifinals at Paris and the round of 16 at Indian Wells.
Zvonareva, 23, who’s also been ranked as high as No. 9, won the W&SFG Women’s Open in 2006 and reached the singles final in 2004. The Russian has won five career singles titles, and this year has reached two finals (Hobart and Doha), the semifinals at Miami, and the quarterfinals at Indian Wells, Bangalore and Auckland. She will make her fourth appearance in Cincinnati, where she has amassed a 9-2 singles record.
Srebotnik, 27, reached her career-high ranking of No. 20 the week after reaching the final at the 2006 W&SFG Women’s Open. The Slovenian will be making her second appearance in Cincinnati, where has a 4-1 record. So far this year, the Slovakian has reached the quarterfinals at Auckland and Sydney.
Garbin broke into the top 25 last year in part by reaching the final at Bogota and the semifinals at Gold Coast. She also reached the round of 16 at the French Open. Thus far this year, she’s reached the quarterfinals at Estoril.
“We’re thrilled to have early commitments from the reigning Wimbledon finalist and two players who’ve become fan favorites in Cincinnati,” said tournament director Bruce Flory. “All three play well here, and should be exciting to watch in August.”
Flory expects several other top names to fill out the 32-draw in the coming months. The complete field will be announced approximately four weeks prior to the start of the tournament.
