" While the new number one from Serbia is resting prior to the June 23 start of the grass-court Grand Slam at the All England club, Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli will gamble on a wrist injury as she plays as second seed.
The Frenchwoman has been troubled by the problem for several weeks and said she had considered skipping Roland Garros.
But instead of resting, Bartoli, a losing 2007 semi-finalist to Justine Henin, pushed herself to play on grass at Birmingham, dropping her opening match.

Bartoli Back On Track
EASTBOURNE, UK - The Top 4 seeds made their first appearances of the week at the International Women's Open on Wednesday. One won, two lost and another didn't even finish as the second round nearly came to completion at the key Wimbledon warm-up event on the lawns of Devonshire Park in Eastbourne.
Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva, both coming off impressive clay court seasons and seeded No.1 and No.3, respectively, fell to youngsters Caroline Wozniacki and Ekaterina Makarova. Wozniacki, whose junior highlights include the Wimbledon girls' title two years ago, notched her third Top 10 win of the season against the No.4-ranked Kuznetsova, 62 62. Makarova, a qualifier into the draw, beat the No.13-ranked Zvonareva nearly as handily, 63 63, for her third Top 20 win of the season. Already in 2008, Wozniacki notched two wins over Marion Bartoli; Makarova has wins over Agnes Szavay and Nicole Vaidisova.
Given their recent results, if any of the Top 3 seeds weren't going to advance, most would have picked No.2 seed Bartoli, who came in on a four-match losing streak and has won barely more than a third of her matches this season. But her powerful, flat groundstrokes certainly found their range just a week before she defends her finals run at Wimbledon, as she beat Sybille Bammer, 63 60.
No.4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska split sets with Virginie Razzano in the last match of the day, dropping the first 6-3 and winning the second 6-3, before darkness fell and the conclusion was pushed to Thursday.
In other matches, Gisela Dulko got past Olga Govortovsa, 61 67(3) 62; qualifier Alisa Kleybanova beat Aravane Rezai, 63 57 63; and Samantha Stosur advanced when Amélie Mauresmo retired up 2-1 in the first set due to a left thigh injury.
"I felt something on the last point of my first service game; during the return game, I couldn't really move that well or push off of my left leg anymore," Mauresmo said. "With this happening at the beginning of the match, I didn't feel like taking any risks before Wimbledon next week. I am of course disappointed but I felt I had to make the decision to stop it here."
The completion of the Radwanska-Razzano match and all four quarterfinals are on the schedule for Thursday.

"Bartoli will next play Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, the fourth seed, who had to see off two opponents during the day to earn her semi-final place. "A real tough semi ahead. But if Marion gets past Aga she will lift the cup
