Bartoli advances at Bank of the West Classic
Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - Sixth-seeded Marion Bartoli advanced in straight sets in first-round action, while American Linsday Davenport withdrew from the $600,000 Bank of the West Classic tennis event.
Bartoli eased to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova to advance to the second round. The Frenchwoman was the only seeded player to play Monday, when American Lindsay Davenport pulled out of the event.
Davenport wasn't scheduled to play until Tuesday, but she withdrew because of a right knee injury that also forced her out of the second round at Wimbledon last month.

Keothavong wins first round in California
Anne Keothavong is through to the singles second round at the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Tier II event in Stanford, California.
Keothavong defeated the world No 33, India’s Sania Mirza, 7-6(4) 6-1 on Monday to set up a second round clash against the No 6 seed, Marion Bartoli. The French player is ranked No 15 in the world and finished runner-up at The Championships in 2007. Keothavong is still yet to drop a set having also convincingly won three matches in qualifying. The British No 1 defeated America’s Alexandra Podkolzina 6-0 6-2, Belarus' Tatiana Poutchek 6-3 6-3 and France's Julie Coin 6-1 6-0 to book a place in the main draw.
Keothavong is currently at career high singles and doubles world rankings – No 82 in singles and No 204 in doubles. The 24 year-old also recently became the first British female player for a decade to gain direct acceptance into the main draw at The Championships.

Bartoli finally beats Sugiyama, awaits Wozniak in final
Wozniak will next take on No.6 seed Marion Bartoli, who overcame an incredibly lopsided head-to-head record against Ai Sugiyama by dispatching the Japanese veteran handily in the feature night match, 63 63. Bartoli hadn't beaten Sugiyama in their five previous encounters, three of which ended in easy straight set wins.
"The last time we played each other, I was not on the same level," Bartoli said. "I was not moving as fast as I'm moving right now, and I was making a lot more unforced errors. I was not hitting the ball as well as I am right now."
But they hadn't played since the fall of 2006, and their first four encounters all came when the Frenchwoman wasn't even ranked in the Top 60.
"Everything in my game has improved," Bartoli added. "I think I played really well tonight; maybe even better than yesterday at some points. She gave me a hard time. She was hitting the ball really early, playing flat and moving so well. It's always difficult to beat someone when you've lost five times before."
Bartoli, 23 years old, and Wozniak, 20, will meet for the first time in the final.
"I will try to focus on my game first," Bartoli said. "I know pretty much nothing about her game so I will try to be as aggressive as today. I think if I play like today, it will be a great match."
Marion sound like she is up for this final. But it will not be easy I think. Wozniak is playing way above her usual form.
